A man, we'll call him Joe, called me one day for advice on his tax return. He said, "I'm a retired teacher and I usually do my own income tax but something doesn't look right this year. I owe a lot more than usual. Can you have a look at it for me?"
"Sure Joe," I said, "bring it over." Turns out Joe had a tax receipt for a large retiring allowance. "Did you receive this money Joe?" I asked. "Not exactly," said Joe, "I rolled it into an RRSP."
"Well, where's that receipt?" I asked. He said "I didn't get one for that." Ahhh!
So, this little, tiny tax preparer gets on the phone to this very large corporation and says "I think you made a mistake." I explained the situation and they soon agreed that they had, indeed, made a mistake. They issued the missing slip and sent it to Joe.
When Joe got the slip, he brought it to me and I recalculated his return. That phone call saved Joe over $7500.00 that never would've been noticed because there had been no slip issued and no proof of his RRSP.
That was over 10 years ago. I moved away soon after that, but Joe tracked me down, almost 200km away, because he didn't want anyone else doing his taxes. Joe is still my client. Turns out he was missing a few other things too, back in the days when he was preparing his own return. He doesn't miss them anymore, and he sure doesn't miss struggling with doing it himself.
